Il ricco stolto, tutto adorno d'oro,
cattura lo sguardo di Selima;
ella all'onesto pretendente dà il benservito,
e il bellimbusto sceglie per marito.
La sontuosa festa di nozze arriva a compimento,
e già sopraggiunge, pronto, il pentimento,
il mondo vuole essere ingannato,
e allora che sia pure accontentato.
Beate, che solo qualche giorno prima
di cortigiane era indiscussa regina,
ora di viola incomincia a vestire
e addobba con cura pulpito e altare.
Reso benevolo dal suo apparente aspetto,
più d'uno la crede pura come un angioletto.
Il mondo vuole essere ingannato,
e allora che sia pure accontentato.
Quando bacio la mia piccola Carolina,
con tenerezza le giuro eterna fedeltà;
lei finge di non sapere, facendo l'innocente,
che oltre a me c'è un altro spasimante.
E in effetti, un giorno, quando Cloe mi conquistò
Damis a prendere il mio posto si affrettò.
E allora, se tutto il mondo dell'inganno é contento,
anche a me tocca subire lo stesso trattamento.
