Tenor solo: Fou el primer dolor de la rosa! Cercant reconfort ella esguarda vers el cel; i sota la vermellor del capvespre la reina de les flors segueix el seu camí. Una modesta caseta solitària atrau ara el seu esguard. Adossada al cementiri, guarnida tot a l’entorn per lilàs; a través de la porta oberta es veu una creu i una làpida, transfigurades per la llum daurada del capvespre. Ella hi entra, allà hi ha un ancià vinclant el cap, blanc com l’argent, ell cava amb la pala a la mà, una fossa a la terra verda. La rosa: Per a qui és aquesta fossa, profunda i petita? L’enterrador: És per a la filla del nostre moliner. La rosa: Oh pobra germana, profunda condolença! L’enterrador: Una mort penosa, una mort dolorosa, morir d’un cor trencat. La rosa: Com haig d’interpretar les teves paraules? L’amor fidel comporta aquests sofriments?
