Am Runenstein in der Sommernacht Da spielen die Wasserfrauen; Das Wasser klingt, es singt die Luft, Der Mond steht hoch im Blauen. Das plätschert und lacht, das wogt und taucht Wie Lilien auf und nieder, Es schwimmt auf der Flut das goldne Haar, Es schimmern die weißen Glieder. Mit schilfigem Bart der Meermann bläst Die gewundene Muschelposaune, Die Nixen schlingen den Reigen dazu, Sie sind in der besten Laune. Da schreit die Jüngste und kichert drauf: Ei seht, was fand ich in der Welle! Ein blinkendes winkendes Todtengebein, Wie Silber glänzt es so helle. Ich stieß mit dem Fuß an's Korallenriff Beim lustigen Untertauchen, Da lag's in den Ästen, ich zog es hervor; Nun sagt, wie können wir's brauchen?" Neugierig beschaut der Schwarm den Fund, Die Königin spricht mit Lachen: "Das beinerne Ding ist hübsch und fein, Eine Harfe woll'n wir draus machen. Komm Schilfbart, alter Musikant, Du weißt von solchen Dingen; Ich schenk' einen Schwertfisch dir zum Roß, Kannst du's zu Stande bringen." Der Meermann kommt, er nimmt das Gebein, Er fügt es mit langem Geklügel, Er macht aus den Fingern die Wirbel gut, Aus dem Brustbein macht er den Bügel. Er nimmt von der Königin goldenem Haar, Und spannt es drüber als Saiten; Ei wie so wundersam durch die Nacht Die Töne schwellen und gleiten! Nun schlägt er die Harfe wohl auf und ab, Da lassen die Wellen das Rauschen, Der Wind hält leise den Odem an, Und schlummert ein im Lauschen. Die Möven setzen sich nieder am Strand, Goldfischlein steigen vom Grunde, Es horcht die Luft, es horcht das Meer Bezaubert in der Runde; Der Meermann harft und singt darein, Er fühlt nicht Müh noch Sorgen; Die Nixen schlingen den Reigen dazu Bis an den rothen Morgen.

Prop de les pedres rúniques en una nit d’estiu és on juguen les ondines; l’aigua ressona, l’aire canta, la lluna està ben alta al cel. Xipollen i riuen , onegen i cabussen com lliris, amunt i avall, els cabells daurats suren a l’aigua, els membres blancs resplendeixen. Amb la seva barba de joncs, el tritó bufa dins una closca de cargol de mar, les ondines formen una rotllana, elles estan de molt bon humor. Amb una rialla, la més jove s’avança i diu: “Ei, mireu el que he trobat a les onades! L’ossam lluent, llampant d’un mort, brilla tan lluminós com l’argent. Amb el peu he topat amb l’escull de coralls mentre joiosa em cabussava, estava allà entre els branquells i l’he arrencat; digueu ara, què podríem fer amb ell?” L’estol contempla la troballa amb curiositat, i la reina diu tot rient: “Aquesta ossada és fina i bonica, fem-ne una arpa. Vine Barba-de-jonc, tu vell musicastre, amb això tu t’hi coneixes; et regalo un peix espasa com muntura si ho pots arribar a fer.” El tritó s’avança, agafa l’ossam i l’ajunta amb gran subtilesa, dels dits en fa les clavilles, de l’estèrnum en fa el marc. Pren uns quants cabells daurats de la reina i els tiba al damunt, a guisa de cordes; oh, que meravellosos, tota la nit, els sons s’eleven i voleien! Adés, quan toca l’arpa crescendo i diminuendo, les onades deixen de mormolar, el vent reté suaument el seu alè, i s’adorm tot escoltant. Les gavines es posen a la platja, peixets daurats pugen de la fondària, l’aire escolta, el mar escolta, tots encisats a l’entorn; el tritó toca l’arpa i canta alhora, sense neguit ni cansament; les ondines dansen en rotllana fins a primera hora del matí.
