In der hohen Hall' saß König [Sifrid]1: "Ihr Harfner, wer weiß mir das schönste Lied?" Und ein Jüngling trat aus der Schar behende, Die Harf' in der Hand, das Schwert an der Lende: "Drei Lieder weiß ich; den ersten Sang, Den hast du ja wohl vergessen schon lang: Meinen Bruder hast du meuchlings erstochen, Und aber, hast ihn meuchlings erstochen! Das andre Lied, das hab' ich erdacht In einer finstern und stürmischen Nacht: Mußt mit mir fechten auf Leben und Sterben, Und aber, mußt fechten auf Leben und Sterben!" Da lehnt er die Harfe wohl an den Tisch, Und sie zogen beide die Schwerter frisch Und fochten lange mit wildem Schalle, Bis der König sank in der hohen Halle. El rei Sifrid seia a l’egrègia sala: “Arpistes, qui de vosaltres sap la cançó més bonica?” I prest, un jovencell sortí del grup, amb l’arpa a la mà i l’espasa a l’altra: “Jo sé tres cançons; la primera fa temps que deus haver oblidat: tu apunyalares el meu germà amb traïdoria, i un altre cop, l’apunyalares amb traïdoria! L’altra cançó que jo he imaginat en una fosca i tempestuosa nit: tu has de lluitar amb mi a vida o mort, i un altre cop, has de lluitar a vida o mort!” Llavors posà l’arpa damunt la taula, i prest, ambdós desembeinaren les espases i lluitaren llarga estona amb ferotge dringar fins que el rei caigué a l’egrègia sala. “Ara cantaré la tercera i la més bonica cançó, que mai em cansaré de cantar: el rei Sifrid jau en la seva vermella sang, i un altre cop, jau en la seva vermella sang!”
