Jung Siegfried war ein stolzer Knab', Ging von des Vaters Burg herab. Wollt' rasten nicht in Vaters Haus, Wollt' wandern in die Welt hinaus. Begegnet' ihm manch Ritter wert Mit festem Schild und breitem Schwert. Siegfried nur einen Stecken trug; Das war ihm bitter und leid genug. Und als er ging im finstern Wald, Kam er zu einer Schmiede bald. Da sah er Eisen und Stahl genug; Ein lustig Feuer Flammen schlug. "O Meister, lieber Meister mein, Laß du mich deinen Gesellen sein, Und lehr du mich mit Fleiß und Acht, Wie man die guten Schwerter macht!" Siegfried den Hammer wohl schwingen kunnt, Er schlug den Amboß in den Grund; Er schlug, daß weit der Wald erklang und alles Eisen in Stücke sprang. Und von der letzten Eisenstang' Macht' er ein Schwert, so breit und lang. "Nun hab' ich geschmiedet ein gutes Schwert, Nun bin ich wie andere Ritter wert; Nun schlag' ich wie ein andrer Held Die Riesen und Drachen in Wald und Feld."

Le jeune Siegfried qui était un fier garçon Descendait du château de son père. Il ne voulait pas rester dans la maison de son père Il voulait partir parcourir le monde. Il rencontra maint digne chevalier Au solide écu et à la large épée. Siegfried ne portait qu'un bâton, C'était pour lui grandes peine et amertume. Et alors qu'il marchait dans une sombre forêt, Il arriva bientôt à une forge. Il vit là quantité de fer et d'acier, Un joyeux feu où des flammes battaient. « Ô maître, mon cher maître, Laisse-moi être ton compagnon, Et apprends-moi avec zèle et soin Comment on fait une bonne épée ! » Siegfried brandit si bien le marteau Qu'il enfonça l'enclume dans le sol, Il frappait tant que le bruit s'entendait au-loin Et que tout le fer partait en morceaux. Et de la dernière barre de fer , Il se fit une épée, large et longue. « Maintenant je me suis forgé une bonne épée, Maintenant je suis aussi digne que les autres chevaliers : Maintenant, tel un autre héros, je frapperai Les géants et les dragons par les forêts et les champs. »
