Inmitten des eitlen Getriebes, beim Balle, hab ich dich erblickt. Doch hat ein Geheimnis dein liebes, dein sinnendes Antlitz bedrückt. Es schauten die Augen, die hellen, voll Wehmut, doch silbern erklang die Stimme wie Spiele der Wellen, wie ferner Schalmeiengesang. Dein Wesen erschien so versonnen, so schön deine schlanke Gestalt, dein Lachen, in Perlen zerronnen, seither mir im Herzen erschallt. In einsamen nächtlichen Schauern umschwebt mich dein Zauber hinfort: ich sehe dein Angesicht trauern, ich höre dein heiteres Wort. Und Träume voll Seligkeit mich umfangen, mich leise erlösen vom Schmerz; wohl zweifle ich manchmal mit Bangen, doch scheint es mir: Dein ist mein Herz!
