Unangeklopft ein Herr tritt Abends bei mir ein: »Ich habe die Ehr', Ihr Rezensent zu sein!« Sofort nimmt er das Licht in die Hand, besieht lang meinen Schatten an der Wand, rückt nah und fern: »Nun, lieber junger Mann, sehn Sie doch gefälligst mal Ihre Nas' so von der Seite an! Sie geben zu, daß das ein Auswuchs is'.« Das? Alle Wetter - gewiß! Ei Hasen! ich dachte nicht, all' mein Lebtage nicht, daß ich so eine Weltsnase führt' im Gesicht! Der Mann sprach noch [Verschiedenes]1 hin und her, ich weiß, auf meine Ehre, nicht mehr; meinte vielleicht, ich sollt' ihm beichten. Zuletzt stand er auf; ich tat ihm leuchten. Wie wir nun an der Treppe sind, da geb' ich ihm, ganz frohgesinnt, einen kleinen Tritt, nur so von hinten aufs Gesäße mit - alle Hagel! ward das ein Gerumpel, ein Gepurzel, ein Gehumpel! Dergleichen hab' ich nie gesehn, all' mein Lebtage nicht gesehn einen Menschen so rasch die Trepp' hinabgehn!

A sera si presenta un signore senza farsi annunciare: "Di essere il suo critico mi è toccato l'onore!" E subito con la mano il mio lume solleva, e la mia ombra sul muro poi osserva, da vicino, da lungi: "Bene, mio bel giovanotto, potrà ben notare che questo suo naso non ha certo un profilo perfetto! Questa qui è proprio una vera escrescenza." Questa? Perbacco - certo, pazienza! E' proprio così! Da quando son nato mai avevo pensato di avere un naso così pronunciato! Quel tale poi di questo e di quello si mise a parlare, non so più di che cosa, lo giuro sul mio onore; forse credeva che gli avrei dato ragione. Finalmente si alzò; verso il portone lo accompagnai facendogli luce. Ma presso le scale gli assestai allora, con sommo piacere, un piccolo calcio, proprio là sul sedere - Corpo di mille bombe! Che gran rumore! Un ruzzolare, un capitombolare! Da quando sono al mondo mai avevo visto qualcuno che scendesse le scale così tanto veloce e così tanto presto.
