Ich Uralter kanns erzählen, wie der Herbst durch jenes Jahr
Wie ein Strom rann und ein Spiegel hundert Abendrten war.
An Obstbäumen lehnten Leitern, knackten unter Eil und Fleiss,
Und die Kinder schmausten immer, und die Kranken lachten leis.
Auf dem Boden rochs nach Äpfeln, in den Kellern feucht nach Wein,
Und wer eine Sense ansah, dem fiel doch der Tod nicht ein.
War ein Herbst so lang wie jeder; Sonne sinkt und Stunde schlägt;
Doch an jedes Leben, schien uns, war ein Kleines zugelegt.

Je peux dire comment s'est passé l'automne en cette année-là,
Comment une rivière a coulé et un miroir
Aux arbres fruitiers, des échelles étaient appuyées, elles craquaient sous la précipitation et l'activité
Et les enfants se régalaient toujours, et les malades souriaient doucement.
Par terre, il y avait une odeur de pommes, les caves étaient humides de vin,
Et celui qui voyait une faux, la mort de le frappait pas.
L'automne fut aussi long que les autres ; le soleil se couchait et les heures sonnaient ;
Mais à chacun la vie, nous semblait-il, ajoutait un peu.
