Die Schwalben zieh'n und Schwäne
Es blüht der Weidenbaum:
Mein Rößlein schüttelt die Mähne
Und beißt im seinen Zaum.
Das schönste Kind von allen
Läßt trauernd ihr Tüchlein wehn;
Zwei Tränen ließ ich fallen
Doch niemand hat's geseh'n.
Es steht ein Pfahl, ein bunter,
Am Scheideweg im Feld:
Der weist ins Dorf hinunter
Und in die weite Welt.
In Osten oder [Westen]1,
Wo find ich wohl das Glück?
Ich glaub' es ist am besten
Ich kehre zu ihr zurück.

Chant de séparation
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
Les hirondelles et les cygnes passent,
Le saule fleurit :
Mon petit cheval secoue sa crinière
Et mord sa bride.
La plus belle enfant parmi toutes
Tristement agite son mouchoir ;
Je laisse tomber deux larmes
Mais personne les a vues.
Un poteau coloré se tient
Au carrefour dans le champ :
Il indique en bas le village
Et le vaste monde.
À l'est ou à l'ouest,
Où puis-je trouver le bonheur ?
Je crois que le mieux est
Que je retourne vers elle.
