[Bei Nacht im Dorf]1 der Wächter rief: Elfe! Ein ganz kleines Elfchen im Walde schlief -- Wohl um die Elfe! -- Und meint, es rief ihm aus dem Tal Bei seinem Namen die Nachtigall, Oder Silpelit hätt' ihm gerufen. Reibt sich der Elf' die Augen aus, Begibt sich vor sein Schneckenhaus Und ist als wie ein trunken Mann, Sein Schläflein war nicht voll getan, Und humpelt also tippe tapp Durch's Haselholz in's Tal hinab, Schlupft an der Mauer hin so dicht, Da sitzt der Glühwurm Licht an Licht. »Was sind das helle Fensterlein? Da drin wird eine Hochzeit sein: Die Kleinen sitzen bei'm Mahle, Und treiben's in dem Saale. Da guck' ich wohl ein wenig 'nein!« -- Pfui, stößt den Kopf an harten Stein! Elfe, gelt, du hast genug? Gukuk! Gukuk!

La nuit, dans le village, le veilleur cria : "Elfe !" Un tout petit elfe dormait dans la forêt, C'était juste onze heures ! Et il pense que de la vallée il est appelé Par son nom par le rossignol, Ou que Silpelit l'a appelé. L'elfe se frotte les yeux, Sort de sa maison en coquille d'escargot, Et se tient comme un homme ivre, Car son sommeil n'était pas fini, Et se mit à clopiner, tip, tap À travers le bois de noisetiers dans la vallée, Se glisse au-dessus du mur, Là est assis le ver luisant, couvert de lumière. « Qu'est-ce que ces fenêtres allumées ? Il doit y avoir un mariage dedans : Le petit peuple est assis à table, Et s'agite dans la salle. Je vais juste y jeter un coup d'œil ! » Zut ! il se cogne la tête sur la pierre dure !
