Im Walde läuft ein wildes Pferd,
Hat nie den Zaum gelitten,
Goldfalb, mit langer, dichter Mähn,
Schlägt Funken bei allen Tritten.
Der Königssohn, er fängt es ein,
Hat sich darauf geschwungen,
Es bläht die Brust und schwingt den Schweif,
Kommt wiehernd hergesprungen.
Und alle horchen staunend auf,
Die in den Tälern hausen.
Sie hören's vom Gebirge her
Wie Sturm und Donner brausen.
Da sprengt herab der Königssohn,
Umwallt vom Fell des Leuen,
Des wilden Rosses Mähne fleugt,
Die Hufe Feuer streuen.
Da drängt sich alles Volk herzu
Mit Jubel und Gesange:
"Heil uns! er ist's, der König ist's,
Den wir erharrt so lange!"

Dans la forêt galope un cheval sauvage,
Il ne souffre aucune bride,
Il a robe mordorée, longue et épaisse crinière,
À chaque pas il fait jaillir des étincelles.
Le fils du roi le capture,
S'est jeté sur son dos,
Il gonfle son poitrail, balance sa queue,
Saute en avant en hennissant.
Et tous écoutent étonnés,
Ceux qui habitent les vallées
Entendent descendre des montagnes
Un grondement pareil à la tempête et au tonnerre.
Alors le fils du roi saute de selle,
Enveloppé de la peau du lion,
La crinière du coursier sauvage flotte,
Ses sabots projettent des flammes.
Alors tout le peuple se presse là
Chantant et poussant des cris d'allégresse :
« Noël ! C'est lui, c'est le roi
Que nous attendions depuis si longtemps ! »
