Oder Hirten singen nachts und Hirsche treten
in den Kreis ihrer Feuer, des Hains uralte Trauer.
Tanzende heben sich von einer schwarzen Mauer;

Sotto troncati salici, dove bimbi abbronzati giocano,
le foglie fluttuano e suonano le trombe. Brivido di tombe.
Rosse bandiere irrompono attraverso l'acero in lutto,
cavalieri lungo i campi di segala, mulini deserti.
Oppure pastori cantano a notte, e cervi entrano
nel cerchio dei loro falò, antichissima tristezza del bosco.
Danzatori si stagliano contro un muro nero;
vessilli scarlatti, risa, delirio, trombe.
