Greiser Trinker
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Dort seh ich einen grauen Mann
mit zittern nach dem Glase greifen.
Ach dächt' er doch viel lieber daran,
die alten Lüste zu ersäufen!
Man nennt den Rebensaft mit Recht
die Milch und Nahrung schwacher Greise,
vielleicht, weil er die Seele schwächt,
daß man sie billig Kinder heisse.

Old drunkards
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I see a grey man
trembling there to grab a glass.
Oh, I think it much preferable
to drown old desires there!
One rightly calls the vine-juice
the milk and food of weak old men,
perhaps while it weakens the soul
it cheaply heats children.
