Par les soins de quelle main as-tu fleuri ici ? Je n'en sais rien ; tout comme j'ignore sur quelle tombe tu veilles. Celle d'un jeune homme ? Tu lui as donné ton salut ;` celle d'une jeune fille ? Ta grâce. Dans le bosquet qu'élargit, la nuit, la clarté de la neige, Où le chevreuil, pieusement, passe tout près de toi ; près de la chapelle, au bord de l'étang de cristal, c'est là que j'ai cherché ta patrie enchantée. Tu es belle, enfant de la lune et non du soleil : ce qui fait les délices des autres fleurs serait pour toi mortel ; c'est l'air glacial et embaumé du ciel qui nourrit ton chaste corps de givre et de senteur. Dans ton sein, une plénitude dorée abrite une fragrance qui s'exhale à peine : c'est ainsi que, frôlée par la main de l'ange, la parure nuptiale de la Mère bénie répand son parfum. Cinq gouttes vermeilles, souvenir de la sainte Passion, suffiraient à te vêtir superbement : mais, au temps de Noël, tu décores innocemment ton vêtement blanc d'une lumineuse touche de vert. L'elfe, parti vers minuit danser dans la vallée luminescente, se tient interdit devant ton éclat mystique ; curieux, il reste un instant à distance, puis s'esbigne.
