O semaine qui portes témoignage d'une douleur sacrée ! Tu t'accordes si gravement aux délices du printemps, tu élargis, dans le rayonnement du soleil rajeuni, l'ombre de la Croix sur la terre lumineuse. En silence, tu abaisses ton voile ; cependant le printemps, lui, n'en porte pas : la violette embaume sous les arbres en fleurs et tous les oiseaux chantent leur jubilation. O, faites silence, oiseaux des vertes pâtures ! Les mornes plaintes des cloches retentissent alentour, les anges entonnent tout bas des mélopées funèbres ; Oiseaux tout là-haut dans le bleu du ciel, faites silence ! Vous les violettes, ne couronnez aujourd'hui aucune tête bouclée ! Ma pieuse enfant va composer avec vous un bouquet de deuil, vous irez avec elle chez la Madone, et là, vous fanerez sur l'autel du Seigneur. Ah ! Là-bas, enivrée de thrènes, et doucement entêtée par les lourdes vapeurs d'encens, elle cherche son fiancé parmi les tombes. Amour et printemps, tout est englouti !
