Einmal nach einer lustigen Nacht
War ich am Morgen seltsam aufgewacht:
Durst, Wasserscheu, ungleich Geblüt;
Dabei gerührt und weichlich im Gemüt,
Beinah poetisch, ja, ich bat die Muse um ein Lied.
Sie, mit verstelltem Pathos, spottet' mein,
Gab mir den schnöden Bafel ein:
"Es schlägt eine Nachtigall
Am Wasserfall;
Und ein Vogel ebenfalls,
Der schreibt sich Wendehals,
Johann Jakob Wendehals;
Der tut tanzen
Bei den Pflanzen
Ob bemeldten Wasserfalls --"
So ging es fort; mir wurde immer bänger.
Jetzt sprang ich auf: zum Wein! Der war denn auch mein Retter.
-- Merkt's euch, ihr tränenreichen Sänger,
Im Katzenjammer ruft man keine Götter!

Une fois, après une joyeuse nuit,
je me suis senti bizarre au réveil :
soif et peur de l'eau, pouls irrégulier ;
en plus, émotif, et tout mollasson,
en somme assez poète : je demandai à la muse un poème.
Elle, avec un pathos de mauvais goût, se moqua de moi
et me servit cet infâme brouet :
"Un rossignol chantait, un jour
à la cascade ;
ainsi qu'un autre oiseau,
qui s'appelait Tord-le-col,
et ce Jean-Jacques Tord-le-col,
il dansait
dans la verdure
à la cascade en question--"
Et ça continuait comme ça ; j'étais de moins en moins rassuré.
Alors je bondis : du vin ! Ce fut mon salut.
--Chanteurs larmoyants, écoutez cet avertissement :
quand on a la gueule de bois, on n'appelle pas les dieux !
