In 't stadje lijkt het een kermis wel, Daar vieren ze bruiloft met dans en met spel. De vrolijkerds parelt de wijn zo rood, De bruid echter ziet zo wit als de dood. Ja, dood voor hem die nooit zij vergeet, Maar die op het feest niet bruidegom heet; Hij staat tussen 't volk daar in 't hart van de kroeg En speelt op zijn vedel geweldig genoeg. Hij ranselt de snaren, zijn haar wordt grijs, 't Viooltje gaat trillen en gillen onwijs, Hij klemt het aan 't hart en heeft zelf niet door: Hij breekt het kapot, het valt op de vloer. Het is afschuw'lijk als iemand zo sterft, Zo jong zijn hart de vreugde al derft. Ik kan en wil het langer niet zien! Ik ga er van draaien, word stapel misschien! Wie doet met de vingers u wijzen naar mij? O God -- kom, help, heb medelij, Dat ons niet de waanzin overmant. 'k Ben zelf ook een arme muzikant.
