Jij heerlijk glas, nu sta je leeg, Glas, dat hij vaak hield graag geheven; De spin heeft al met stil beweeg Om jou haar duister web geweven. Voor mij moet jij gevuld nu zijn, Met maanlicht goud van Duitse druiven! En in jouw diepe, heil'ge schijn Sla ik mijn blik, met licht'lijk beven. Wat mij al kijkend wordt bekend Is aan filisters niet te duiden. Toch wordt mij duid'lijk dit moment Dat niets een vriend van 'n vriend kan scheiden. Ik drink je leeg, vol goede moed, Op dit geloof, o glas, al toostend. Klaar spiegelt in jouw kostbaar bloed, Bokaal, het sterrengoud zich, troostend! Stil schuift de maan door 't dal, ten troon, Ernst kleurt te middernacht de slagen. Leeg staat het glas; de heil'ge toon Wordt nog door het kristal gedragen.
