Kon ik jou in lied'ren prijzen, Dan zong 'k jou het langste lied. Hoe 'k jou prees, op alle wijzen, Moe werd 'k daarvan eeuwig niet. Maar wat altijd mij frustreerde, Is dat 'k altijd in 't geheim Jou moet koest'ren, diep vereerde, In mijn hart als heilig schrijn. En dat jij, wat luid ik voordraag Dan wel prijs in zangplezier, Meent toch dat 'k dat dieper meedraag Dan jou, lief, in 't harte hier. Deze pijn heeft mij gedwongen, Jou te eren met dit lied, Maar 't is scherp van 't leed doordrongen: Jou bereiken kon 'k nog niet.
