Horch! auf der Erde feuchtem Grund gelegen,
Arbeitet schwer die Nacht der Dämmerung entgegen,
Indessen dort, in blauer Luft gezogen,
Die Fäden leicht, unhörbar fließen
Und hin und wieder mit gestähltem Bogen
Die lustgen Sterne goldne Pfeile schießen.
Im Erdenschoß, im Hain und auf der Flur,
Wie wühlt es jetzo rings in der Natur
Von nimmersatter Kräfte Gärung!
Und welche Ruhe doch und welch ein Wohlbedacht!
Mir aber in geheimer Brust erwacht
Ein peinlich Widerspiel von Fülle und Entbehrung
Vor diesem Bild, so schweigend und so groß.
Mein Herz, wie gerne machtest du dich los!
Du schwankendes, dem jeder Halt gebricht,
Willst, kaum entflohn, zurück zu deinesgleichen.
Trägst du der Schönheit Götterstille nicht,
So beuge dich! denn hier ist kein Entweichen.

Écoute ! Reposant sur le socle humide de la terre,
la nuit repousse âprement le crépuscule ;
alors, des fils ténus et imperceptibles
s'étirent dans l'air bleu,
et, çà et là, les étoiles souriantes
tirent des flèches d'or avec des arcs aciérés.
Dans le sein de la terre, sous la ramée et sur l'eau,
comme tout grouille à travers la nature entière
dans une inépuisable fermentation !
Et pourtant, quel repos, et comme tout ça a été bien imaginé !
Mais, au secret de mon cœur, se manifeste au contraire
un sentiment douloureux, à la fois de trop-plein et de manque,
devant ce tableau si silencieux et immense.
Mon cœur, comme tu te répands facilement !
Toi si faiblard, démoli pour un rien,
tu voudrais, au premier essor, retourner à tes semblables.
Si tu ne supportes pas la beauté du silence de la divinité,
tu n'as qu'à t'incliner ! Il n'y a pas d'échappatoire.
