Tenor-Solo Dem Sang von ferne lauschend, schwingt Die Peri höher sich empor; Der reinsten Liebe Seufzer bringt Sie als Geschenk vor Edens Tor. Hoch kopft ihr Herz, die Hoffnung spricht's: Bald soll sie Edens Palmen nahn, Denn lächelnd nimmt der Geist des Lichts Am Tore diese Gabe an. Und horch, von Himmelsbäumen ruft Kristallner Glöckchen Klang, sie lauscht Dem Läuten in ambrosischer Luft, Die her von Allahs Throne rauscht; Sie sieht die Sternenschalen blinken, Rings um den See des Lichts gereiht, Wo die verklärten Seelen trinken Den ersten Trank der Herrlichkeit. Doch eitel war der Peri Hoffen, Noch stand das ew'ge Tor nicht offen; Es spricht der Engel, Schmerz im Blick: Der Engel Noch nicht! Treu war die Maid, und die Geschichte, Geschrieben überm Haupt des Herrn, Liest lange noch der Seraph gern; Doch, Peri, noch währt der Verschluß Von Edens Tor: Viel heil'ger muß die Gabe sein, Die dich zum Tor des Lichts läßt ein!

Tenore solo Ascoltando da lontano quel canto, si libra più in alto la Peri; Porta il sospiro dell'amore più puro come dono alle porte dell'Eden. Forte le palpita il cuore, la Speranza le dice: Sarai presto vicina alle palme dell'Eden perché con un sorriso lo Spirito della Luce accoglierà, sulla soglia dell'Eden, il dono. Ma senti, dagli arbusti celesti nasce un suono cristallino di campanelle, lei ascolta quel suono diffondersi nell'aria balsamica, che soffia dal trono di Allah; vede scintillare i globi celesti che circondano il lago di luce, dove le anime trasfigurate bevono il primo sorso della gloria divina. Ma anche questa volta la Peri invano a sperato restano ancora chiuse le porte eterne e così le parla l'Angelo, addolorato lo sguardo: L'Angelo Non ancora! Fedele è stata la fanciulla, e la sua storia, resta scritta nel capo del Signore, e tante volte sarà letta dal Serafino; ma per te, o Peri, restano ancora chiuse le porte dell'Eden: assai più sacro dovrà essere il dono capace di schiudere le porte della luce!
