Queste arie gioiose, questi canti festosi, Che il vento del mattino mi fa sentire a tratti, mi serrano il cuore,mi turbano la mente... Essi sono felici!... Qui, sotto i rami oscillanti, io li seguivo nella loro allegria così tenera: scambiavano parole piene di dolcezza... Erano mio fratello!....e anche mia sorella!... Trattenevo il respiro per poterli ascoltare... Essi sono felici!... O tempi per sempre svaniti Quando come loro ero puro nell'animo quando questa natura serena ridava vigore al mio corpo stanco; Quando accanto a mia madre, in estasi per il fatto di premere il mio capo sul suo cuore, non conoscevo della vita che l'innocenza e la gioia! Ah! Per quale amara follia, l'animo mio, sgomento, colpito mi ha costretto a fuggire da questi luoghi?... Per tutta la notte, sopra rocce o nella polvere ho percorso lentamente pericolosi sentieri... O, tempi per sempre svaniti quando come loro ero puro nell'animo Quando accanto a mia madre, in estasi per il fatto di premere il mio capo sul suo cuore, non conoscevo della vita che l'innocenza e la gioia!
