La Peri ¡Abajo, al templo del Sol! Hay un amuleto, en esa piedra brilla un signo por los relámpagos impreso, lo veo, y también una hoja sobre la que puro resplandece el sello de Salomón. Quizás ellos me aclaren en dónde sobre la Tierra o en el mar se encuentra el mágico poder, el noble don que el Edén abra a los pecadores. Quizás puedan mis ojos leerlo, ¡abajo! Tenor Ella desciende con alegre esperanza, aún sonríe el cielo con benignos ojos, el esplendor del oro vespertino aún está en el oriente abierto. Ya sobre el valle de Baalbek, divisa un niño que juega y que canta entre las rosas silvestres, sonrosado y espontáneo como las mismas rosas. Cerca del niño, ya cansado de jugar, y que reposa entre las flores, ve bajar de un fatigado corcel a un hombre, que rápido en una fuente de hierbas rodeada se inclina para beber. Vuelve luego su salvaje mirada hacia el hermoso niño, sin temor sentado, y jamás se vio a la luz del día rostro tan salvaje como este, terrible, horrendo, cual negra nube, salida de la noche y el fuego, en el que anidan todos los vicios, y en donde aparecen el perjurio, el asesinato y la traición a la esposa, que con letras de sangre en aquel rostro aparecían escritas. Mezzosoprano Pero oíd, el llamado a la plegaria vespertina, mientras el Sol desciende lentamente, de los mil minaretes de Siria flota en el aire; el niño se levanta del lecho de flores que le había servido de reposo, se arrodilla sobre el florido suelo, y con angelicales labios pronuncia de Dios el nombre eterno; parece, con sus manos y su mirada, hacia el cielo vespertino levantadas, un ángel niño que aquí abajo se hubiera extraviado y de nuevo su hogar buscara. Tenor ¿Y qué siente el hombre pecador, que allí se apoya y recuerda ahora tantos años de culpa y sangre, que en la oscura corriente de su vida jamás ha vislumbrado la senda de la salvación, y nadie le ha ofrecido el ramo de olivo? El hombre Hubo un tiempo, bendito niño, cuando joven y puro como tú eran mis obras y mis plegarias, ¡pero ahora…!
