Ich weiß eine Farbe, der bin ich so hold, Die achte ich höher als Silber und Gold; Die trag' ich so gerne um Stirn und Gewand Und habe sie ,,Farbe der Wahrheit`` genannt. Wohl blühet in lieblicher, sanfter Gestalt Die glühende Rose, doch bleichet sie bald. Drum weihte zur Blume der Liebe man sie; Ihr Reiz ist unendlich, doch welket er früh. Die Bläue das Himmels strahlt herrlich und mild, D'rum gab man der Treue dies freundliche Bild. Doch trübet manch' Wölkchen den Äther so rein! So schleichen beim Treuen oft Sorgen sich ein. Die Farbe des Schnees, so strahlend und licht, Heißt Farbe der Unschuld, doch dauert sie nicht. Bald ist es verdunkelt, das blendende Kleid, So trüben auch Unschuld Verläumdung und Neid. Warum ich, so fragt ihr, der Farbe so hold Den heiligen Namen der Wahrheit gezollt? Weil flammender Schimmer von ihr sich ergießt Und ruhige Dauer sie schützend umschließt. Ihr schadet der nässende Regenguß nicht, Noch bleicht sie der Sonne verzehrendes Licht: D'rum trag' ich so gern sie um Stirn' und Gewand Und habe sie ,,Farbe der Wahrheit`` genannt.

Ik weet wel een kleur, ja, waarvan ik zo houd, Die schat ik nog hoger dan zilver en goud; Die draag ik zo graag op mijn hoofd en kledij, De ‘kleur van de waarheid’, zo heet zij voor mij. Wel bloeien in lieflijke, tedere vorm De gloeiende rozen, maar kwetsbaar enorm. De ‘bloem van de liefde’ werd daarom hun naam; Hun charme is prachtig, maar houdt niet lang aan. Het blauw van de hemel straalt heerlijk en mild, Dus koos voor de trouw men dat vriend’lijke beeld. Maar soms trekken wolken de ether toch dicht, Zo dringen ook zorgen de trouw vaak uit zicht. De kleur van de sneeuw, die men stralen steeds ziet, Heet kleur van de onschuld, maar lang duurt zij niet. Al gauw is ‘t verdonkerd, ’t verblindende kleed; Door laster en afgunst lijdt onschuld ook sleet. Waarom toch, zo vraag je, de kleur die je roemt De heilige kleur van de waarheid genoemd? Omdat door haar schijnsel je alles goed ziet En zij ons bescherming en vastigheid biedt. Haar schaadt ook de gutsende regenbui niet, Noch bleekt haar het zonlicht, hoe ’t zindert en ziedt; Dus draag ik haar graag op mijn hoofd en kledij En heet zij de ‘kleur van de waarheid’ voor mij.
