Ach Gott, was hat mein Vater, und meine Mutter gedacht, Daß sie mich zu den Nonnen [in das]1 Kloster gebracht! Nun darf ich nimmer lachen und muß im Schleier gehn, Und darf kein liebend Herze mein Herze verstehn. Sie haben abgeschnitten mein langes schwarzes Haar, Hat keiner sich erbarmet meiner sechzehn Jahr; Ich bin schon so betrübt und bin doch noch so jung, Und hat die Welt der Freuden doch für alle genung. An meiner Zelle Fenster bauen die Vögelein, Da möcht' ich oft mit ihnen so frei und lustig sein; Ich [höbe]2 meine Flügel und fände wohl den Steg Weit über alle Türme und Klöster [hinweg]3. Und wenn der Abend dämmert und dunkelt die Nacht, Hab' ich vieltausendmal an meinen [Schatz]4 gedacht; Nun bin ich eine Nonne, mein [Schatz ist so]5 weit, Drum fließen meine Tränen allezeit. Es fließen wohl die Wellen [mitsammen]6 in das Meer, Es fliegen mitsammen die Vögel drüber her, Der Tag hat seine Sonne, die Nacht den Sternenschein; Nur ich muß alle Stunden einsam sein. Ich wollt', sie läuteten im Kreuzgang erst um mich, Und trügen mit den Kerzen mich still und feierlich; Da wär' ich los auf einmal von aller Not und Pein, Und dürfte mit den Engeln wieder fröhlich sein.

Ah mon Dieu, mon père, ma mère, à quoi ont-ils pensé Pour m'amener au couvent des nonnes ! Maintenant plus jamais je n'aurai le droit de rire et je dois aller voilée, Et mon cœur ne doit comprendre aucun cœur aimant. Ils ont coupé mes longs cheveux noirs, Personne n'a eu pitié de mes seize ans ; Je suis déjà si triste et suis encore pourtant si jeune, Et le monde a pourtant assez de joie pour tous. Les petits oiseaux construisent à la fenêtre de ma cellule, Là, avec eux, je peux être souvent libre et joyeuse ; Je déploierais mes ailes et trouverais bien le passage Au-dessus de toutes les tours et loin des couvents. Et lorsque tombe le soir et que s'assombrit la nuit, J'aurais pensé des milliers de fois à mon trésor ; Maintenant je suis une nonne et mon trésor est bien loin, Aussi mes larmes coulent sans cesse. Les vagues se pressent bien ensemble dans la mer, Les oiseaux là-haut volent ensemble, Le jour a son soleil, la nuit la clarté des étoiles ; Maintenant je dois être seule à chaque heure. Je voudrais qu'elles sonnent juste pour moi dans le cloître, Et avec des bougies me portent, silencieuse et hiératique ; Je serais alors soudain libérée de toute peine et détresse, Et aurais le droit d'être heureuse avec les anges.
