Es gingen zwei Gespielen gut
Language: German (Deutsch)

Es gingen zwei Gespielen gut
Wohl übr ein Au, war grüne;
Die eine führt ein frischen Mut,
Die andre trauret sehre.
»Gespiele, liebste Gspiele mein,
Was traurest du so sehre?«
»Wir zwei, wir han ein Knaben lieb;
Draus könn'n wir uns nit teilen.
Und han wir zwei ein Knaben lieb,
Hilf Gott, was soll draus werden?
So nimm du meines Vaters Gut,
Dazu mein Bruder zu eigen!
Der Knab untr einer Linden stund,
Er höret der Red ein Ende.
»Hilf, reicher Christ im Himmel hoch,
Zu welcher soll ich mich wenden?
Ich will die Reiche fahren lan,
Will bhalten die Säuberliche.

Two good playmates went
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Two good playmates went
Over a meadow, was green;
One full of fresh spirit,
The other mourning greatly.
"Playmate, most dearest playmate mine,
why are you mourning so greatly?"
"We two, we like one boy,
which we cannot share."
"And if we two like one boy,
Help God, what will come of it?
So you take my father's fortune,
and take my brother."
The boy stood under a linden tree,
He hears the talk to the end.
"Help, rich Christ in high heavens,
Which shall I turn to?
I shall let the rich one go,
And keep the neat one.
We are still young and strong,
Great fortune we shall acquire."
He gave her a ring of gold,
Onto her snow-white hands:
See, fine brown maiden,
From you I shall not turn away.
