Was er sang, das singt er wieder, Wieder tönt es ihm zurück, Süßes Echo klingt hernieder -- Keine Täuschung! -- sichres Glück! Aguaitant vers la finestra amb reixa, a la brillant claror de la lluna, està un trobador amb la seva cítara davant del castell de Dürrenstein, acorda l’instrument per a una dolça melodia i comença així el seu cant, llavors un pressentiment li diu fluixet: “Cerca perseverant, i trobaràs!” Rei Ricard, heroi d’Orient, has caigut veritablement? La teva espasa s’ha de rovellar al mar o allà a la llunyania et cobreix una tomba? Cercant-te per tots els camins va el teu trobador sense descans, llavors una pluja fina li diu: “Cerca perseverant, i trobaràs!” Ets viu i fas via aquí a la terra? Potser t’encalça un enemic per lligar-te amb cadenes, a tu, que tantes n’has trencat? Potser ja estàs amarrat, oh superb lleó, en vil immobilitat? – A tothora crida l’esperança: “Cerca perseverant, i trobaràs!” Espera Ricard, i tingues confiança! La fidelitat em guia i em condueix; i allà lluny en una contrada de la pàtria l’amor prega encara per tu. Blondel segueix la teva pista, Margot anhela el teu retorn, un pressentiment diu al teu trobador: “Cerca perseverant, i trobaràs!” Escolta! Un so fluixet, fluixet, s’enlaira de la masmorra del castell, una melodia ben coneguda arriba a les orelles de Blondel. Com la crida d’un íntim amic li ressona la seva pròpia cançó, i el seu pressentiment li diu més fort: “Cerca perseverant, i trobaràs!” El que ell havia cantat, ho torna a cantar i de nou li arriba el ressò, un dolç eco es deixa sentir. – No és cap il·lusió! – Joia segura! És el que cercava per tots els camins, ai!
