View original text (without footnotes)Confirmed with Hoffmann's von Fallersleben Gesammelte Werke; Zweiter Band : Lyrische Gedichte : Liebesleben Fortsetzung, Kinderleben, Berlin, F. Fontane, 1891, p. 320.
Note: the word "Kuckuck" is sometimes spelled "Kuckuk" (or "Kuk-kuk" in scores, since "ck" becomes "kk" when the syllables are separated).1 Grell: "ruft's". This formulation is common, and has persisted in the literature. In Hoffmann von Fallersleben's original poem, however, the word is "ruft."
2 Schumann, Dresel: "Lasset uns"
3 Schumann adds here "Lasset uns singen und springen!"
4 Omitted by Schumann.
5 Schumann, Dresel: "Komm"
6 Schumann adds here "Komm in die Felder und Wälder!"
