Im Winter
Language: German (Deutsch)

Als meine Freunde,
Die Bäume, noch blühten,
Rosen und Feuer-
Lilien [glühten]1,
Waren die Menschen
All mir bekannt,
War mir die Erde
Lieb und verwandt.
Jetzt, wo die Freunde,
Die Bäume, gestorben,
Jetzt, wo die Lieben,
Die Blumen, verdorben,
Stehen die Menschen
Kalt auf dem Schnee,
Und was sie treiben,
Macht mir nur weh.

In winter
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
When my good comrades,
The trees, were in blossom,
Roses and tiger-
Lilies still flaming,
People around seemed
Faces I knew,
Earth was a cherished
Cousin to me.
Now that those comrades,
The trees, have all withered,
Now that my dear ones,
The flowers, have perished,
People stand coldly
Out on the snow,
And through their doings
Cause me but woe.
