Mezzosoprano solo: Al jovencell abandonat tan sols li resta, per encara donar-li conhort, que ella, la que per molts anys estimà fidelment, es trobi ara protegida de l’hàlit de la mort al palau principesc del seu pare; car allà, ragen refrescants les fonts, les estances flairen dolçament amb fragàncies balsàmiques i on l’aire és pur encara, pur com el que li venta el front. Tenor solo: Però mireu qui s’esquitlla silenciosament vers el trist boscatge, sembla la deessa de la salut, amb galtes color de rosa, fresques com la primavera! És ella, i a la llum de la lluna ell veu com, radiant, s’acosta la promesa fidel. Ella agafa l’amic als seus braços i posa la seva vermella galta damunt la d’ell tota esblaimada, i remulla els seus ondulats cabells a l’estany per refrescar-li el front. El jovencell: Tu aquí? Fuig! Una alenada meva et portaria la mort!
