Blume und Duft
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG FRE
In Frühlings Heiligthume,
Wenn dir ein Duft an's Tiefste rührt,
Da suche nicht die Blume,
Der ihn ein Hauch entführt.
Der Duft läßt Ew'ges ahnen,
Von unbegrenztem Leben voll;
Die Blume kann nur mahnen,
Wie schnell sie welken soll.

Flower and fragrance
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
In spring's shrine,
if a fragrance stirs you to your depths,
then search not for the flower
from which that breath emanated.
Fragrance allows us a premonition of Eternity -
of full, untrammeled life;
but a flower can only remind us
how quickly it will wilt.
