Mir Ruhe zu verkünden;
Nur ich allein mit meiner Pein
Vermag sie nicht zu finden.
Wann läutest du denn mir zur Ruh'
Von deinem Kirchlein droben?
Sei ruhig, Herz! Ein jeder Schmerz
Hört einmal auf zu toben.
Einst wird dich schon des Glöckchens Ton
Mit deiner Qual versöhnen.
Und schweigt der Klang auch noch so lang,
Er muß doch endlich tönen!

Risuona per la valle la campana,
e pace e riposo vuole annunciare.
Ma io sto solo con la mia pena,
pace e riposo non riesco a trovare.
Quando finalmente suonerai per me
lassù sulla cima del campanile?
Cuor mio, stai calmo! Ogni dolore,
che adesso infuria, avrà un giorno fine.
Un giorno il suono della campana
del tuo dolore ti renderà amico.
E anche se a lungo resterà ancora muta,
dovrà suonare, infine, il rintocco!
