То не ты ли желанный неведомый друг, Греза детских умчавшихся дней? Истомилася грудь от вседневных тревог, Гаснет в сердце желаний всех пыл... И давно уже мне мой насмешливый рок Все дороги к блаженству закрыл. Дорогает свеча... Ночь глухая плывет. Я один... И в немой тишине Кто-то скорбные песни поёт Наклоняется нежно ко мне.

Schon wieder sinkt kein Schlaf herab auf die müden Augen. Ich bin allein... Doch in der stummen Stille singt jemand leise für mich traurige Lieder, beugt sich sanft zu mir herab. Das Herz erstarrt... Das verzauberte Gehör fängt Laute vertrauter Reden ein... Bist das nicht du, ersehnter unbekannter Freund, das Traumbild verflogener Kindertage? Die Seele ist gepeinigt von den alltäglichen Sorgen, die Glut aller Wünsche ist im Herzen erloschen... Und schon lange hat mir mein höhnisches Schicksal alle Wege zur Glückseligkeit versperrt. Die Kerze brennt nieder... Die dumpfe Nacht treibt dahin. Ich bin allein... Und in der stummen Stille singt jemand leise für mich traurige Lieder, beugt sich sanft zu mir herab.
