Wenn die Sonne niedersinket, Und der Tag zur Ruh sich neigt, Luna freundlich leise winket, Und die Nacht herniedersteigt; Wenn die Sterne prächtig schimmern, Tausend Sonnenstrahlen flimmern: Fühlt die Seele sich so groß, Windet sich vom Staube los. Schaut so gern nach jenen Sternen, Wie zurück ins Vaterland, Hin nach jenen lichten Fernen, Und vergißt der Erde Tand; Will nur ringen, will nur streben, Ihre Hülle zu entschweben: Erde ist ihr eng und klein, Auf den Sternen möcht sie sein. Quando il sole tramonta, e il giorno va a riposare, la luna amica piano invita, e la notte scende quaggiù; quando le stelle brillano splendenti, mille raggi di sole sfavillano: si sente l'anima così grande, da sollevarsi dalla polvere. Guarda volentieri verso quelle stelle, come tornando alla sua patria, qui verso quelle luci lontane, e dimentica le cose inutili della terra; vuole solo ad ogni costo andare, fuggire dal suo involucro: la terra è stretta per lei e piccola, alle stelle vuole andare. Se urlano le tempeste della terra, falsa gioia premia i malvagi: sperando guarda l'anima in alto, dove regna il Giudice delle Stelle. Nessun timore più può affliggerla, nessuna forza può comandarla; con viso trasfigurato, si innalza alla luce divina. Un tenue presentimento mi scuote da questi mondi; non dura ancora a lungo il mio pellegrinaggio sulla terra, presto avrò raggiunto la meta, presto salirò a voi, coglierò presto il frutto al trono di Dio, il bel premio alle mie pene.
