Wenn die Sonne niedersinket, Und der Tag zur Ruh sich neigt, Luna freundlich leise winket, Und die Nacht herniedersteigt; Wenn die Sterne prächtig schimmern, Tausend Sonnenstrahlen flimmern: Fühlt die Seele sich so groß, Windet sich vom Staube los. Schaut so gern nach jenen Sternen, Wie zurück ins Vaterland, Hin nach jenen lichten Fernen, Und vergißt der Erde Tand; Will nur ringen, will nur streben, Ihre Hülle zu entschweben: Erde ist ihr eng und klein, Auf den Sternen möcht sie sein. Quand le soleil se couche, Et que le jour s'incline vers son repos, La lune fait signe amicalement et doucement, Et la nuit descend. Quand les étoiles brillent magnifiquement, Un millier de rayons de soleil scintillent : L'âme se sent si grande, Elle se tord hors de la poussière. Elle regarde avec tant de plaisir vers ces étoiles, Comme si c'était sa patrie, Elle regarde vers ces lumières éloignées, Et oublie les futilités terrestres ; Elle veut seulement lutter, seulement faire son possible, S'envoler de son enveloppe mortelle : Le monde est étroit et petit , Parmi les étoiles elle voudrait être. Si les tempêtes de la terre font rage, Si une fausse fortune récompense les méchants : En espérant elle regarde vers le haut, Où le maître des étoiles trône. Aucune crainte ne peut plus la tourmenter, Aucun pouvoir ne peut lui donner des ordres ; Avec un visage transfiguré, Elle s'élance vers la lumière du ciel.
