Dort vor [Mariä]2 heilig' Bild Sie betend niederkniet, Der Himmel hat ihr Herz erfüllt, Und alle Weltlust flieht: "O [Jungfrau]3 rein! Laß mich allein Dein eigen sein!" Alsbald [der Glocke dumpfer]4 Klang Die Betenden erweckt, Das Mägdlein wallt die Hall' entlang, Es weiß nicht, was es trägt; [Am Haupte]5 ganz Von Himmelsglanz Einen Lilienkranz. Mit Staunen [schauen]6 all' die Leut' Dies Kränzlein licht im Haar, Das Mägdlein aber wallt nicht weit, Tritt vor den Hochaltar: "Zur Nonne weiht Mich arme Maid! Stirb, Lieb' und Freud'!" Ad Augsburg c'è un'alta casa, vicino al vecchio duomo, di là uscì, un chiara mattina, una fanciulla, tutta devota; si sentiva un canto, e verso il duomo andava la cara figura. Là, davanti all'immagine di Maria? si inginocchiò pregando, il cielo riempiva il suo cuore, ogni gioia terrena era svanita: "O Vergine purissima! Fa' che io sia soltanto tua!" Appena il suono cupo delle campane riscosse gli oranti, la fanciulla attraversò la navata, senza sapere che cosa portava: sul suo capo, lucente di splendore divino, una ghirlanda di gigli. Con stupore guardava tutta la gente la ghirlandetta chiara alla sua chioma, ma la fanciulla non andò lontano, si fermò presso all'altare maggiore: "Io monachella andrò, me poverella! Estinguiti, amore e gioia!" Dio, concedi che questa fanciulla porti in pace la sua ghirlanda. Era la mia diletta, lo rimarrà per sempre. Lei non lo sa, il mio cuore si è spezzato. Estringuiti, amore e luce!

Wohlauf! noch getrunken den funkelnden Wein! Ade nun, ihr Lieben! geschieden muß sein. Ade nun, ihr Berge, du väterlich' Haus! Es treibt in die Ferne mich mächtig hinaus. Avanti! Ancora ebbro del vino splendente, addio miei cari, dobbiamo separarci, addio montagne, e tu casa paterna! Una forza mi spinge prepotente via. Il sole non resta fermo nel cielo, è spinto ad andare per terre e per mari. L'onda non si ferma sulla spiaggia solitaria. Le tempeste urlano con forza per la contrada. Con le nuvole che corrono se ne va l'uccello, e canta lontano un canto familiare, così è spinto il ragazzo per boschi e per campi, per paragonare alla madre il mondo del suo viaggio. Qui lo salutano i noti uccelli sul mare, che volarono qui dalle pianure natie, qui profumano i fiori amici intorno a lui, gli portano l'aria di casa. Gli uccelli, che conoscono la sua casa paterna, i fiori, che lui piantò per offrirli all'amata, e l'amore lo segue, lo tiene per mano, così gli diventa patria la terra più lontana.

Tu giovane verde, tu erba fresca! Quanti cuori per te guariscono, che soffrivano per la neve dell'inverno, o come il mio cuore ti desidera! Già appena ti desti dalla notte della terra, come sorride a te il mio sguardo! Qui nel quieto fondo del bosco, ti premo, verde, sul cuore e sulla bocca. Che voglia di allontanarmi dalla gente! Il mio dolore, parola umana non conforta: solo il giovane verde sul mio cuore lo fa battere più sereno.

Nei vostri crepuscoli, tra canti d'uccelli e fonti d'argento, è sgorgato anche qualche canto dal mio petto, fresco e chiaro. Le vostre onde, i vostri suoni, il vostro stormire mai stanco, tutte le vostre melodie hanno destato nel mio petto il canto. Qui in questi ampi prati tutto è per me triste e muto, e mi guardo intorno nell'aria azzurra e vedo le forme delle nuvole. Quando il petto è oppresso raramente si muove il canto: come l'uccello canta a metà separato dall'albero e dalle fronde.

Du herrlich Glas, nun stehst du leer, Glas, das er oft mit Lust gehoben; Die Spinne hat rings um dich her Indes den düstren Flor gewoben. Jetzt sollst du mir gefüllet sein Mondhell mit Gold der deutschen Reben! In deiner Tiefe heil'gen Schein Schau' ich hinab mit frommem Beben. Was ich erschau' in deinem Grund Ist nicht Gewöhnlichen zu nennen. Doch wird mir klar zu dieser Stund', Wie nichts den Freund vom Freund kann trennen. Auf diesen Glauben, Glas so hold! Trink' ich dich aus mit hohem Mute. Klar spiegelt sich der Sterne Gold, Pokal, in deinem teuren Blute! Still geht der Mond das Tal entlang, Ernst tönt die mitternächt'ge Stunde. Leer steht das Glas! Der heil'ge Klang Tönt nach in dem kristallnen Grunde.

Ora devi riempirti per me, chiaro come la luna, con l'oro dell'uva tedesca! Nella tua sacra profonda lucentezza, guardo con devota emozione. Ciò che vedo nel tuo fondo, non si può dire con parole comuni. Ma capisco bene in questo momento che nulla può separare l'amico dall'amico. Con questa fede, caro bicchiere, ti bevo fino in fondo con animo elevato. Chiaro si specchia l'oro delle stelle, boccale, nel tuo prezioso sangue! Tranquilla va la luna per la valle.
