Dort vor [Mariä]2 heilig' Bild Sie betend niederkniet, Der Himmel hat ihr Herz erfüllt, Und alle Weltlust flieht: "O [Jungfrau]3 rein! Laß mich allein Dein eigen sein!" Alsbald [der Glocke dumpfer]4 Klang Die Betenden erweckt, Das Mägdlein wallt die Hall' entlang, Es weiß nicht, was es trägt; [Am Haupte]5 ganz Von Himmelsglanz Einen Lilienkranz. Mit Staunen [schauen]6 all' die Leut' Dies Kränzlein licht im Haar, Das Mägdlein aber wallt nicht weit, Tritt vor den Hochaltar: "Zur Nonne weiht Mich arme Maid! Stirb, Lieb' und Freud'!" A Augsburg hi ha una casa alta, a prop de la vella catedral, d’allà surt, de bon matí, una donzella molt pietosa; sonen uns càntics, la benèvola persona es dirigeix a la catedral. Allà, davant la sagrada imatge de Maria, s’agenolla tot pregant, el cel a omplert el seu cor i tots els plaers mundans han fugit: “Oh verge pura! Deixa’m ser només teva!” Poc després, el toc somort de les campanes desperta els feligresos, la donzella travessa la nau sense saber que porta al cap, nimbada d’esplendor celestial, una corona de lliris. Tota la gent contempla amb estupor aquesta corona lluminosa als seus cabells, la donzella però no va gaire lluny, s’atura davant l’altar major: “Ordeneu-me monja a mi pobre donzella! Moriu, amor i joia!” Déu, fes que aquesta donzella porti en pau la seva corona, ella és la més estimada del meu cor i ho serà fins al judici final. Ella no sap que el meu cor s’ha trencat, moriu, amor i llum!

Vinga! Ebri encara del vi escumant! Adéu estimats! Ens hem de separar. Adéu muntanyes i tu, casa paterna! Una força m’empeny a marxar lluny. El sol no resta parat al cel, es veu empès a moure’s per terres i mars. L’onada no resta en una platja solitària, les tempestes bramulen amb força per les contrades. Amb núvols que corren, se’n va l’ocell i canta al lluny una cançó de la terra nadiua i així, un jove xicot es veu empès per boscos i camps, per ser igual a la seva mare, la terra que dóna voltes. El saluden ocells coneguts de l’altre cantó de mar que han volat cap aquí des del país natal; la flaire de les flors al seu voltant li és familiar, el vent les ha dut aquí del seu país. Els ocells coneixen la seva casa paterna, les flors que antany ell plantà per fer rams d’amor i l’amor el segueix, li dóna un cop de mà: i així, la terra més llunyana esdevé la seva pàtria.

Tant de bo que mai us hagués deixat, boscos, sublims i meravellosos! Em mantinguéreu en amorosa abraçada durant llargs, llargs anys. On, en les vostres penombres, hi havia cant d’ocells i fonts argentines, sorgiren també moltes cançons del meu cor, fresques i clares. El vostre oneig, el vostre so, el vostre murmuregi incansable, totes les vostres melodies, despertaren el cant en el meu pit. Aquí, en aquestes prades llunyanes, tot em sembla erm i mut i esguardo el cel blau cercant imatges en els núvols. Oprimit en el meu pit, rarament es desvetlla el cant; com l’ocell que només canta a mitges quan el foragiten dels arbres i rierols.

Jetzt sollst du mir gefüllet sein Mondhell mit Gold der deutschen Reben! In deiner Tiefe heil'gen Schein Schau' ich hinab mit frommem Beben. Was ich erschau' in deinem Grund Ist nicht Gewöhnlichen zu nennen. Doch wird mir klar zu dieser Stund', Wie nichts den Freund vom Freund kann trennen. Auf diesen Glauben, Glas so hold! Trink' ich dich aus mit hohem Mute. Klar spiegelt sich der Sterne Gold, Pokal, in deinem teuren Blute! Still geht der Mond das Tal entlang, Ernst tönt die mitternächt'ge Stunde. Leer steht das Glas! Der heil'ge Klang Tönt nach in dem kristallnen Grunde.

El que he vist en el teu fons no es pot anomenar com sòlit. Però se m’ha fet clar en aquest moment que res pot separar un amic del seu amic. A aquesta creença, oh vas tan amable! Amb gran coratge bec de tu fins la darrera gota. Clar es reflexa l’or de les estrelles, oh copa, en la teva preciosa sang. La lluna es mou en silenci al llarg de la vall, greument toquen a mitjanit. El vas està buit! Els tocs sagrats ressonen en el fons de cristall.
